4 of the Most Memorable Celebrity Vintage Looks

Vintage has always been cool, especially that of the luxury designer variety.

For decades celebrities have worn classic dresses taken from designer collections from the past, but this tradition appears to be having yet another resurgence and is proving more relevant than ever.

Julia Roberts, Zendaya, Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian, Bella Hadid, Emma Watson and Kate Moss, to name but a few, have all wowed in vintage dresses from other eras. With so many high-end designers and so much innovation in recent fashion, why are celebrities turning to the past?

Stars live for a fashion moment. Taking a dress from a different era and a collection no longer available creates another level of exclusivity. Vintage dresses are a rarity and the perfect opportunity for fashion-forward celebs to dig into designer archives and separate themselves from the pack.

But this is 2021, and whilst vintage is cool, so is sustainability. Over the past few years, we have seen rapid growth in this sector, with increasing awareness of the impact of fashion on the environment—currently the number 2 polluter in the world after oil.

Recycling, upcycling and circular fashion have started to become commonplace with brands old and new, looking at ways to be more ethical, and eco-friendly.

Cate Blanchett is one actress paving the way after issuing a sustainability-driven statement declaring that she would not wear any new fashion looks at the 2020 Venice Film Festival. Instead, the actress wowed in her recycled ensembles from previous red carpets events.

While some celebrities are taking more significant action than others, wearing vintage is definitely a step in the right direction.

So, in appreciation, we took a look back at some of the best vintage looks from recent history:

Zendaya, the ultimate Gen Z fashion muse, recently picked up the Visionary Award at the Eco-Age Green Carpet Fashion. The event, which celebrates the best in sustainable fashion, saw Zendaya in a stunning vintage Versace dress from the fashion house’s 1996 collection—a nod to the year she was born.

Jennifer Aniston

Aniston stole the show at the 2020 SAG Awards in LA, not only for that infamous encounter with her ex Brad Pitt but also for her vintage white satin gown from Christian Dior.

The actress deviated from her trademark black, with this white number taken from John Galliano’s Spring/Summer 1999 collection.

Kim Kardashian

Kim K wore this vintage showstopper to the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party in 2020. The famous ‘oyster dress’ from Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2003 collection was one of only two that made it into production—the other now sits in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Amal Clooney

The human rights lawyer and wife of George Clooney can do no wrong when it comes to fashion. The Lebanon-born beauty wore this elegant vintage gown from Jean-Louis Scherrer’s Spring 2007 Couture collection to a dinner hosted by the Prince of Wales, held at Buckingham Palace.
