To ensure your precious pearls stand the test of time, careful upkeep is essential.

So, how does one go about maintaining their pearls and retaining their lustre?

We have a few pearls of wisdom to get you set.

How to Care for Pearl Jewellery

To Clean Your Pearls:

  • The nacre or outer coating of each pearl is quite delicate, so it is recommended that pearls are wiped with a soft cotton cloth.

  • Wiping them helps to prevent a potential build-up of dirt, oils or substances your pearls may come into contact with.

  • If there are visible markings or stains, mix water and mild soap and use a damp cloth to wipe the pearls clean.

  • Be sure you do not submerge your pearls in water. If you have a strand of pearls, this may damage the integrity of the silk thread holding them together.

  • Gently wipe your pearls with a dry cloth after cleaning and leave them to dry on a towel or soft piece of cotton.

To Maintain Your Pearls:

  • As things like perfume, hairspray, body lotions can cause damage to your pearls, it is best to put your pearls on last.

  • When storing your pearls, they should be laid out flat and untangled.

  • Store in a cloth or silk lined box that is breathable so your pearls do not dry out.

  • Be sure to store your pearls separately from other jewellery or accessories, as they are prone to scratches.

  • Pearls should be worn frequently as this helps to retain their moisture.

  • It is recommended to take pearls to a jeweller for professional cleaning and maintenance once a year.

If you are looking for some new pearls to add to your collection, we have rounded up six beautiful buys from Kailis.

"Born from the rare Australian Pinctada Maxima oyster—the largest of all pearl-producing oysters in the world,", you won't find anything else like them.

These Australian South Sea pearls are all the more precious given that the Pinctada Maxima produces just one cultured pearl every two to three years.

Each Kailis pearl is "authentic, untouched, and naturally radiant" and undergoes zero enhancement, elevation, or treatment.

A few of our favourites:

The Nautical Pearl Pendant with Chain features a 15mm Australian South Sea pearl, which sits on a 45cm sterling silver double trace chain.

The sterling silver Nexus Bracelet is both modern and elegant. This curb link bracelet is set in high polished sterling silver and features a round 13mm Australian South Sea pearl.

The classic Oval Collier Strand in white gold is beautiful and timeless, with 37 Australian South Sea oval-shaped pearls ranging in size from 9.4 to 12.6mm. The strand has a total length of 44.5cm and is complete with a white gold bayonet clasp (secure push and twist mechanism).

The unique Vigour bracelet features a 12mm Australian South Sea pearl, a gold-plated sterling silver rondel and tiger's eye beads—known to bring good luck.

The simple and sophisticated 18ct Element Cuff is made with yellow gold and features an 11mm Brand 1 pearl—the rarest and most valuable of all Kailis pearls.

The iconic Manhattan Empire Earrings mimics the Manhattan skyline with sharp geometric lines, a glimmering of pave set diamonds, complete with two 11mm Brand 1 Australian South Sea pearls.
