As we begin to catch glimpses of lockdowns easing and restrictions lifting, I am one of many creating a bucket list of everything I want to do. After living through a strict 100+ days of lockdown in Sydney, it’s easy to identify everything we took for granted before regulations complicated life — albeit while keeping us safe.

Coming out into the world again, I know I’m not the only one with a fresh perspective. The park is full of picnics, restaurants seem to be consistently buzzing, and plane tickets, campsites, and future concerts are selling out in no time at all.

If you’ve caught the travel bug, rest assured that you’re not the only one. With recent announcements of international borders opening and the anticipation of interstate travel soon, maybe those paused travel plans can finally happen.

But where to travel first?

If you aren’t quite eager for international travel just yet, I’ve just discovered a local holiday that will surely satisfy any wanderlust. Situated two and half hours outside of Melbourne, the twin towns of Echuca and Moama on the Murray River are picturesque country getaways with super convenient locations. While the towns themselves are charming, however, I’ve got my eyes geared towards the river.

Along the Murray River, several luxury houseboats are available for hire as holiday accommodation. All you need to do is head to the moorings near the centre of Echuca, get a driving lesson from the staff, and then you’re free to enjoy your holiday home on the water.

While each houseboat varies, most offer enough space for large groups and feature a few touches of luxury — did someone say jacuzzi?
