In the Market for a New Watch? Check Out the Newest Chronomaster from Zenith
The newest chronograph by Swiss watchmaker Zenith, the Chronomaster Sport, has just recently been released and is being widely touted as a potential successor to the king of sport chronographs the Rolex Daytona. With an impressive suite of features and state-of-the-art movement technology, the Chronomaster Sport looks to be a worthy addition to the Swiss watchmaker’s portfolio and the annals of luxury horology.
Digital Release
The grand unveiling of the Chronomaster Sport took place at the highly anticipated Watch Week, an industry event by Zenith’s parent company LVMH. The event, which included press and industry players from around the world took place from January 25th to the 29th and featured a mix of digital and physical media to showcase Zenith’s newest release alongside sibling companies Hublot and Bvlgari.
Among the week’s proceedings, CEO Julien Tornare presented to the online gathering to mark Zenith’s new release, claiming it to be one of the company’s “most significant launches of 2021”. According to Tornare, the Chronomaster Sport represents the Swiss watchmaker’s celebrated history, as much as its market-leading vision. Both are clearly present in this new release, as it draws on design motifs from its predecessors along the Chronomaster line, and houses a revolutionary remodel of Zenith’s legendary innovation, El Primero movement system.
Features and Design
The Chronomaster Sport bears several design features that speak to the signature look of the previous generations of Chronomaster: the sleek, angular lugs that connect the casing to the bracelet; the round-edged, angled pushers; and the iconic, star-adorned crown that speaks to Zenith’s exhortation “to reach your star”.
Where the Chronomaster Sport differs from its predecessors (and some argue emulates its pricier counterpart, the Rolex Daytona) is in its sportier and more rounded casing. This design style accentuates the contours of the Chronomaster Sport while restraining its overall size. As such, the watch perfectly complements formal attire while retaining its suitability as a sporting device.
A particular standout feature of the Chronomaster Sport is its sleek and eye catching black ceramic bezel with an atypical 1/10th second graduation. This ceramic bezel is virtually scratch-proof, which may preserve the finish and quality of the Chronomaster Sport’s casing over others with stainless-steel bezels.
Additionally, as the 1/10th graduations suggest, the Chronomaster Sport features an impressive new iteration of Zenith’s El Primero calibre with a 5Hz frequency, allowing the watch to display more precise time measurements than its predecessors.
The dial of the watch comes in both matte white or matte black, which results in starkly different styles to suit different wearers. The Chronomaster Sport also features a transparent caseback, which marvellously showcases its El Primero movement system, as well as the improved power reserve kinetic chain, which keeps the watch running for up to 60 hours of non-use.
Overall, the Chronomaster Sport is a nicely differentiated piece among its many competitors in the luxury sport chronograph market. While it bears more than a passing resemblance to the Rolex Daytona, it comes across as a more elegant and understated alternative. Retail pricing for the Chronomaster Sport is similarly a little less weighty than the Daytona, coming in at $10,000 USD.
