History of Missoni

Missoni was born in 1953 when married couple Ottavio and Rosita Missoni opened a knitwear shop in Gallarate, Italy. After modifying their knitting machines to create jumpers and shirts with a modern fit and design, Rosita took on the role of the business manager while Ottavio became the brand’s colourist and technician.

They presented their first collection in Milan in 1958 and their brightly-coloured knitwear was an instant success. The garments produced by Missoni were unlike anything else on the market at the time. They had mastered the art of creating bold knitted patterns, such as zig zags, stripes, and polka dots, and used luxurious blends of highly pigmented materials to create jumpers, dresses, and shirts that were unequivocally timeless and chic.

Missoni clothes quickly became a status symbol among Italians and the brand skyrocketed toward success. In the 1970s, Missoni made its way into American markets after it was praised by the editor of Vogue Magazine and the first Missoni boutique was established inside a Bloomingdales.

Since then, the prospering brand has expanded to include various other lines and products, including sportswear, furniture, and home decor. It remains an internationally acclaimed luxury fashion house to this day.

Where is Missoni Made Today?

Missoni’s headquarters are in Varese, Italy. The factory is located in the Missoni family compound, a countryside property with stunning views of the Italian Alps. This very compound is where the house’s first fashion shows were held, to showcase their simple sophistication and love for colour.

Today, Missoni has brick-and-mortar stores throughout Europe, America, Asia, and now, Oceania. The online store can also ship to destinations worldwide.

Who Designs for Missoni?

Missoni is a family business, through and through. Rosita and Ottavio’s daughter Angela took over designing while her parents pursued spinoff projects, such as homeware and hotel designs.

Angela’s daughter, Margherita Missoni is the creative director of  M Missoni, the brand’s line of more affordable clothing options.

Much of the success of the brand can be attributed to their success as a family-run business. They share the same vision and goals for the brand and have managed to ensure that Missoni designs stay perpetually fresh and modern.
