A Rich and Smooth Orange Tequila Sour

This recipe is part of our premium cocktail series.

So by now, hopefully, you’ve tracked down at least one of our recommended premium spirits and had the chance to craft a truly incredible quaff. From here on out, this series is going to blaze ahead of our premium spirits list and feature incredible hand-selected distillates from around the world, and imaginative mixes you can use them in.

This week’s premium cocktail is based on a simple, time-tested recipe: the classic sour. Commonly made with malty, full-bodied spirits like bourbon, scotch or cognac, the humble sour preserves the best qualities of its star ingredient and presents it in a full-flavoured, superbly balanced package. This recipe takes a slightly different approach and instead uses the masterfully made Clase Azul Reposado TequilaThe Result? A rich, smooth, spiced sipper that’ll leave you wanting more.

There’s no question that Mexico’s iconic distillate is one of the most popular spirits in the western world right now. It plays the lead role in America’s favourite cocktail, the margarita, and has long been the party-shot of choice for revellers young and old. And in recent years, tequila has regularly made headlines as celebrity after celebrity breaks into the beverage game with their own tequila label.

Amidst this wave of growing popularity, artisanal tequila makers like Clase Azul have had the opportunity to refine their craft to the highest standard, producing some of the most premium tequilas on the market. The Reposado Tequila, distributed in traditionally-made and hand-painted ceramic decanters, is the perfect example of this craft. Aged for eight months in bourbon barrels, this reposado presents aromas of vanilla and candied orange, a rich, full-bodied palate and a lingering, spiced and nutty finish.

The bracing flavour and fullness of this reposado makes it the perfect centrepiece for a tequila sour, a brighter and lighter variant of the well-populated family of sour cocktails. With a smooth texture, balanced flavour profile and an earthy hit of sweetness, this deceptively simple cocktail is sure to be one of our new favourites.
