As we enter into March, it’s safe to say we’ve officially crossed the line from summer to autumn.

And as much as I hate to admit it, the cooler (and rainier) days bring with them a necessary wardrobe shift towards more practical cool-climate gear.

Shedding a tear while I shove my summer dresses into a bottom drawer, I can’t help but feel nostalgic already. Where white linen and breezy silhouettes once reigned over my wardrobe, I’ll soon be opting instead for pants and sweaters to take off the chill. And while I do have a few tried and true winter staples, they’re just a bit blah in comparison with my summer wear.

Thankfully, I know just how to remedy the issue.

A few weeks back, I was doing my cursory internet shopping sweep to see what the next season had in store. Put simply: Jeans, scarves, etc. Predictable, no?

However, one activewear brand, in particular, caught my eye. Hailing from Australia and drawing inspiration from New York City and Hawaii, THE UPSIDE is known for its vibrant aesthetic. Needless to say, the brand’s latest collection, ‘The New Mood’, is no exception.

In fact, this activewear collection has unexpectedly been the jumping-off point for my entire autumn uniform. Sans the drab and dark motifs that tend to dominate autumn collections, ‘The New Mood’ feels chic and fun. Referencing French surf culture and vintage sport, the collection is both classic and of the moment.

“We reminisce on simpler times with nostalgic touches like texture, shapes and treatment techniques – think Boucle, flared lines, super-soft peached fabrics, exaggerated collars, over-dyes & mineral washes for that ‘lived in’ look of an old favourite,” THE UPSIDE shares. “Our obsession with outfitting continues, with all styles designed to play well together – mixed or matched this French-girl hack ensures eclectic cool that just works.”

And work, it does.

Keep scrolling to see some standout pieces from the collection. I don’t know about you, but I’ll be leaning heavily on THE UPSIDE all autumn long.

the upside savannah polo

The upside, Savannah Dom Polo ($130)

The upside, savannah pia short ($120)

This unexpected set is equal parts girly and sporty. Plus, the pink/ green combo feels so L.A.

The upside, pride tote bag ($70)

Everyone needs a good tote, and this rainbow-embroidered one comes just in time for Sydney Mardi Gras!

houndstooth crop top

The UPside, Houndstooth Margot Crop ($100)

houndstooth spin shorts

The upside, houndstooth dance spin short ($110)

File under: How to make houndstooth sporty. Thanks to the light colours, this set feels light and airy, even as we make our way into cooler seasons.

white hoodie the upside

The upside, Dana Hoodie ($170)

For those days that get a little chilly, simply pop this hoodie over your houndstooth set. Problem solved!

red striped tank top

The upside, rylee tank ($90)

This striped t-shirt oozes that French-girl aesthetic. It would look equally cute paired with jeans or leggings, accompanied by some classic white sneakers to round out the look.

the upside riviera sweater

The upside, riviera boo knit ($150)

There’s that old-school sports vibe I was talking about. This varsity-style sweater looks oh-so-cosy; perfect to throw on for an evening stroll around the neighbourhood.

the upside printed floral bra

The upside, Sabal ballet bra ($70)

While the temps may be dropping outside, that doesn’t mean that you necessarily want to layer up while working out. For those hot yoga sessions, reach for this adorable sports bra. Reminiscent of a Roxy bikini from the early ‘00s, I just can’t help but love this piece.

the upside knitted vest

The upside, phoenix knitted vest ($130)

Autumn is infamous for fickle weather, and this sweater vest is perfect no matter what temp is on the forecast. A little heavier than a tank but not as hot as a full sweater, it’s the perfect in-betweener.

the upside tan sweat pants

The Upside, south coast crop flare ($170)

Who doesn’t need some easy pants? This pair is crazy comfy, but thanks to the tan colour, it nevertheless looks quite put-together. Perfect for those days when you want to feel dressed up, without actually dressing up.
