Are Dyson Hair Appliances Worth the Hype?

The Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer is known as one of the most expensive hair dryers to hit the haircare market. Well-known for their vacuums, Dyson made their foray into haircare in 2016 with the launch of the now-iconic hairdryer.

It was unlike anything seen before: Fuchsia in colour and futuristic in design with a doughnut-shaped nozzle. Lighter, quieter with fast-drying results, the dryer promised to defend hair from damage with ‘unparalleled advances in technology.’ The deluxe dryer also came with a hefty $549 price tag, perhaps justified by the four years and nearly $100 million spent designing and developing the Supersonic.

The Dyson Airwrap was soon to follow in 2018, with the product quickly selling out upon launch. The company again wowed with never-before-seen technology that styled hair to perfection without any damage.

To understand if these deluxe Dyson dryers and stylers are genuinely worth the hype, we took a look into the unique product features that set Dyson apart and what the reviewers had to say.

What is the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer?

The Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer is a light-weight dryer with fast-drying results. The hair tool boasts an airflow of 105mph with Dyson’s fastest digital motor. It uses Air Multiplier technology to produce a controlled, high-velocity jet of air for quick drying results and utilises intelligent heat control—measuring airflow temperature to prevent heat damage.

If hair-drying is a normal part of your routine, you have probably been on the receiving end of eye-rolls from partners or family members as your oversized hairdryer drones through the house. The Supersonic has reduced this drone to an ambient murmur with a small motor situated in the tool’s handle. The motor placement is also a game-changer in terms of handling, with the weight more evenly distributed to fend off potential wrist aches.

The high-end hairdryer also comes with an array of magnetic styling attachments including smoothing nozzle, styling concentrator, re-engineered diffuser and gentle air attachment for fine hair and sensitive scalps.

What Are People Saying about the Supersonic Hair Dryer?

After the Supersonic’s dramatic rollout in 2016, it became a fast favourite amongst celebrities such as Rosie Huntington Whiteley, Chrissy Tiegen and beloved Hollywood hairstylist Jen Atkin. With over 500+ reviews and a score of 4.3 stars on productreview.com.au, it appears the votes are in.

Whilst ratings for safety, ease of use, quality and cleaning/maintenance were all over four stars, value for money scored a mere 3.4 stars. Though the price tag still stings, the overall response appears positive with the ultimate hairdryer viewed as an excellent long-term investment.

Reviewers have touted the Supersonic as ‘the best hair dryer on the market’, ‘a must-have for ladies with long hair’ and ‘the fastest and quietest hairdryer’. It’s all rather compelling when you consider the price of a fortnightly blow out.

What is the Dyson Airwrap?

The Airwrap is a state-of-the-art styling tool that can dry and style hair simultaneously. It ‘harnesses an aerodynamic phenomenon called the Coanda effect’—curving air to attract and wrap the hair to the barrel. Like the Supersonic, the Airwrap checks temperature 40 times per second, ensuring the temperature remains below 150° to prevent damaged hair.

The tool comes with an elaborate range of attachments including 30mm and 40mm curling barrels, dryer, firm and soft smoothing brushes and a round volumising brush. These work wonders to create various looks, whether curly, wavy or smooth on a range of hair types – no matter how challenging.

The complete set comes in a cool $799, but it’s the price you pay for a hair tool that does it all.

What are People Saying About the Airwrap?

The Airwrap has not garnered the same love as the Supersonic with an overall productreview.com.au score of 3.4. It is viewed as a high-quality product, great for hair health but again scored a meagre 2.7 stars in terms of value for money.

Some reviewers have labelled the tool a ‘game-changer whilst others appeared disappointed with the Airwrap, complaining that ‘curls don’t stay for more than 10 minutes.’

Reviews appear mixed, but if you are looking to save your hair from future distress and invest in the best hair styling technology around then, Dyson is the brand for you.
