What is a beauty fridge?
If you know what a fridge is, you’ve basically got it figured out. However, beauty fridges are created for the express purpose of storing beauty products.
Given that, they range in size from super-small to slightly bigger. Most beauty fridges fall somewhere on the spectrum of what could reasonably fit on bench-top or bathroom counter. Makes sense, right?
Like a typical fridge, beauty fridges regulate the internal temperature to keep whatever is inside cool. The one thing that might differentiate a beauty fridge from the larger version in your kitchen is the cuteness factor.
Of course, as with any Insta-worthy trend, the looks are half the fun of it. Beauty fridges come in a range of colours and styles, but you can bet your bottom dollar that most are photographic and ready to appear on your feed at any moment.
The more I think about it, the more I realise that it is precisely this aspect of the miniature fridges that makes them so appealing. Otherwise, would anyone really care about them? My guess is no, and they’d probably be scattered around your local Bunnings, rather than sold on specialty sites.
But let’s get into the more technical aspects…
Why Do You Need a Beauty Fridge?
Long story short, you probably don’t need a beauty fridge. Based on your living situation and skincare circumstances, however, there are some instances where a beauty fridge might come in handy.
While most skincare products don’t need to be refrigerated, some people prefer the cold feeling on their skin. For things such as gel-based lotions or face masks, keeping them cool can make for a spa-like experience.
Better yet, Marie Claire suggests that keeping certain things cool can actually be beneficial to your products. “Not only will chilling your skincare extend the life of your beauty products,” the fashion and beauty site reports, “storing your serums, masks, and creams at lower temperatures can also prevent bacteria.”
In addition to everyday skincare, some medicated serums and creams also need to be kept cool. Whether you’re someone who has a range of must-be-refrigerated skincare products or you simply prefer a crisp sheet mask, a skincare fridge can give you a special place to store them.
If you don’t mind your skincare sitting by your food, you can simply store skincare in your kitchen fridge. For those who want to keep things separate, or share a living space with housemates, however, having your own dedicated beauty fridge might be worth it.
Which Products Go in a Beauty Fridge?
Not all skincare can — or should — go into a beauty fridge, so make considered decisions before chucking your entire collection inside. Elle warns that some skincare can become insatiable if exposed to fluctuating temperatures too often, so try and stay within a safe range of about 13-16 degrees C.
With that being said, sheet masks, face creams, and face masks will all feel ultra-luxe after being stored in a fridge. Plus, the cold-factor can help reduce inflammation in the same way that ice does.
Similarly, jade rollers and gua sha tools can be stored in a beauty fridge to make your next at-home facial that much more indulgent.
Some say that the sensitivity of vitamin C serums makes them the perfect candidate for storage in a beauty fridge. However, others point to air exposure — not temperature — as the main culprit for damaging said serums.
Anything prescribed by a dermatologist should be checked first. While some medicated treatments specifically require refrigeration, others may be damaged by the cold so it’s always best to double-check.
Is a Beauty Fridge Worth It?
Unfortunately, I can’t give you an easy answer on this one.
Whether or not you think a beauty fridge is worth it will likely be based more on your living situation and preferences than anything else.
While some people do like refrigerating certain skincare products, it’s not exactly a necessary step in an everyday regime. “Whenever a product is released into the market it has to go through stability testing, which shows that a product is stable,” dermatologist Dr Dennis Gross told Elle. This testing ensures that “it will not decompose at room temperature, and that it’s not going to lose its efficacy even once it’s opened,”
That is to say that your beauty products wouldn’t necessarily be better if they were kept cold. And if you want to keep them cool, there’s always the option of your kitchen fridge.
However, if your slew of to-refrigerate products is quite large. Or if your partner finds it gross to have facial serums besides the milk, a beauty fridge could be a worthy investment.
