I Didn’t Know I Needed to See Celebrities in Cher Inspired Outfits

Often referred to as the Goddess of Pop, absolute queen Cher is seventy-five years old and still giving us feels.

Having been a double-threat star since 1963, she’s been exerting influence for nearly six decades and, rather than waning, her star just keeps on rising.

Evidence? Just look at today’s mega-celebrities who are still channelling her fabulously OTT aesthetic. Glitter, sequins, feathers, headpieces—obviously no one wears them as well as Cher herself, but some of the biggest It girls on the planet are giving it a red-hot go. Here are a few of our favourite homages to pop’s most iconic lady.

Celebrities Wearing Cher Inspired Outfits

Zendaya

This Gen-Z star is probably even more famous for her fabulous red-carpet style than she is for her acting (though let’s be honest, she stole the show in Euphoria). She’s bold, she’s daring, she gives approximately zero f*cks and she always looks utterly divine doing it. And while her usual USP is that her style is utterly unique, her outfit for this year’s Oscars was giving us strong Cher vibes.

Her bright yellow Valentino gown paired with obscenely extravagant Bulgari jewels and long, loose dark hair felt like a nod to the yellow jumpsuit Cher wore on The Sonny and Cher Show back in 1970, with a wink at the Bob Mackie gown she wore to her own Academy Awards in 1973.

Dua Lipa

The Met Gala is known for stars upstaging each other with increasingly outrageous outfits, but back in 1974, Cher showed up in the original “naked” dress—a sheer gown embellished with silver and feathers.

We’re kind of surprised it’s taken this long, but another gorgeous dark-haired star has finally resurrected the dress—Dua Lipa wore an almost exact replica to perform in Paris. She called it the dress of her dreams, and her hairstylist captioned a photo of her wearing it, "A très cher moment in #couture.” Tres cher indeed.

Kim Kardashian

Cher was breaking the internet long before the internet existed, but Kim Kardashian was never one to shy away from a challenge. Halloween 2017 saw the reality star pay homage to the pop icon in a replica of the outfit Cher wore to the 1973 Academy Awards.

The yellow, two-piece sari inspired outfit was utterly spectacular on Cher, but we’ve got to hand it to Kardashian—she certainly wore it well.

Of course, that’s not the only time Kardashian has quite literally dressed up as Cher. The avowed fan of the pop star also channelled her in several outfits for a Harper’s Bazaar shoot, including a black blouse and a pair of acid-washed jeans.

Emily Ratajkowski

Emily Ratajkowski, AKA the most beautiful women in the world, according to various polls, stole the show at the 2019 Met Gala in an outfit that took inspiration from a few different iconic Cher outfits.

Ratajkowski walked the pink carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a sequinned gown with a criss-cross halter neck that barely covered her breasts and revealed her abs and most of her back. It was strongly reminiscent of a look worn by Cher at the Santa Monica Rock Awards in the 1970s.

Actress Ratajkowski, who wore her long dark hair loose with a centre part like the pop star, finished off her look with a headpiece of feathered angel wings and silver chains, much like one worn by Cher on the TV show Cher…and Other Fantasies.

Normani

Fifth Harmony star Normani channelled Cher for Halloween in 2019 in a controversial but—in our opinion at least—divine look. Normani, who is Black, was attacked online for imitating a white star, but forget the haters because this homage to Cher was perfect.

She replicated a moment from Cher's Prisoner photoshoot by Harry Langdon from 1979, kneeling against a temple backdrop wearing wire fairy wings and a crystal headpiece. She looked utterly fantastic and we think she’s Strong Enough to rise above the trolls.
