A Gucci Movie Is Coming, and We're In Love With the '80s Aesthetic
Iconic director Ridley Scott is currently filming his next project, a biopic about the Gucci family, called House of Gucci.
The film stars Adam Driver as Gucci himself and Lady Gaga as his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani, as well as Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons and Robert de Niro.
The film is based on the book by Sara Gay Forden, The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour and Greed, published in 2000. It tells the story of the dark underbelly of the success of the house of Gucci.
Guccio Gucci’s grandson and head of the fashion label, Maurizio Gucci, was assassinated outside his office in 1995. Amid the family’s mourning, it transpired that Maurizio’s ex-wife, Reggiani, with whom he had two children, had hired the hitman that fired the gun. She was tried and convicted in 1998, and served 18 years in jail before being released in 2016.
Scott (Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, The Martian) is filming his interpretation of the book in Italy, despite pandemic restrictions, and we’re obsessed with the costuming images that are coming from the various sets. She was known as a stylish woman—during her trial, Reggiani wore head-to-toe Gucci every day in court—so it’s no surprise that the fashion so far has been incredible.
In Gressoney, in the Italian Alps, the protagonists have been photographed in ultra-chic retro ski suits—think form-fitting one-pieces, teamed with wide belts and fur hats. Driver was shot in a head-to-toe white look, while Gaga was seen in all-over red with black highlights.
Back in March, Gaga posted a photo of herself and Driver on set looking divine in 80s ski resort wear, all fur hats, knitwear, turtlenecks and heavy gold jewellery.
Plenty more photos have emerged from the set since then, including some of Gaga in full wedding attire. The white gown with lace detailing and sleeves, an A-line skirt and a sweetheart neckline is an extremely close replica of Reggiani’s dress on the day she married Gucci in 1973. Of course, the marriage was not a happy one considering the subsequent separation and murder.
Other paparazzi photos from sets in Milan show Gaga in a retro belted plaid trench with a gorgeous silk scarf alongside Driver wearing his own khaki trench over a very 80s patterned knit.
Still more shots have appeared of Gaga, in a super glamorous white dress under a white lacy cardigan beside a swimming pool at Lake Como; in mourning in all black, complete with a little black hat, sliding into a bright red Mini; and wearing a fabulous vintage fur coat over a red sheath dress with highlight gold buttons, and plenty of bold, 80s-style accessories.
House of Gucci is due to be released in November (assuming there are no more delays due to pandemics) and we can’t wait for the full montage of divine throwback looks to hit the big screen.
