Timothée Chalamet’s Wardrobe has All We Need for Autumn 2021
Young Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name, Lady Bird, Beautiful Boy) is an onscreen star and an offscreen fashion and grooming icon. His personal style is hard to sum up. As one fashion editor put it: “He’s a risk-taker who looks like he’s spent almost no time at all thinking about his carefully put-together looks.”
He’s known equally for his nonchalant, off-duty style and his sharp, tailored red-carpet looks; he’s cultivated relationships with designers such as Haider Ackermann and Virgil Abloh, who create bespoke looks for him; and he somehow makes trackpants a high-fashion staple.
We’re taking inspiration from a few of his recent outfits to prep our own wardrobes for autumn this year. Take note: Sneakers, slouchy pants, lots of colour and plenty of texture are the order of the season.
How to Dress Like Timothée Chalamet
Comfort Before Style
Chalamet loves a sneaker, and he got right into the ugly-sneaker trend with these Gucci Ultrapace, designed by Alessandro Michele. Complete with tartan-look trackpants and high socks, this is a fine example of an outfit that shouldn’t work but does anyway. Extreme comfort, but make it fashion.
Sneaker Love
There are literally thousands of photos of Chalamet wearing sneakers, including this one of him dressing up a pair of Travis Scott Nikes with a Stella McCartney silk blouse and pink, straight leg jeans.
Warm Fuzzies
This oversized Gucci grandpa cardigan over low-slung Calvin Klein pants that Chalamet wore for a GQ shoot has notes of university student, but the star’s easy nonchalance makes us want that exact cardigan for ourselves.
Flower Power
Whoever said men can’t wear florals was extremely wrong. Bright flowers are a great way to add a pop of colour to autumn and winter outfits—just add shearling.
So Shearling
On the topic of shearling, this Saint Laurent jacket is a cool-weather staple that we’d wear with everything from jeans to tailored pants. Or, like Chalamet, with comfy trackies.
Colouring In
Who said men’s suits had to be black? Chalamet has proved time and time again that colourful tailoring is the best way to stand out against a red carpet or, in our case, a grey autumn day. This fuschia Stella McCartney suit is one of his most iconic outfits and is giving us strong tailoring envy.
Make Tracks (Pants)
Chalamet is all about comfort in his downtime, so we’re taking a leaf out of his book. He’s often seen out and about in trackpants with sneakers and a big jacket—the trick is to wear it with confidence and good grooming so you look debonair rather than dishevelled.
Touch Ups
Autumn and winter are all about eminently touchable textiles, and doesn’t Chalamet know it. He loves to mix and match fabrics—wools, leathers, denims, silks all get a look in—but one of our favourite examples of the actor employing texture in his outfits is this jacket/sweatshirt/t-shirt combo.
Sock it to us
The final fashion tip we’re taking from Chalamet for this autumn is this: use socks to add a pop of colour and texture to any outfit. If you look at photos of the young star out and about, more often than not you’ll notice his socks are brightly coloured and pulled up over the bottom of his trackpants. Should it work? No. But does it? As with everything he does, yes.
