The World’s Most Expensive Car Costs More Than A Mansion in Vaucluse

The most expensive car in the world costs more than a Vaucluse mansion. A lot more.

With a median property price of $5.8 million, there’s no denying that Vaucluse is one of Sydney’s most ritzy suburbs. But even a property here doesn’t add up to the same dollar value as the most expensive car, which rings in at an insane $18.7 million.

The Most Expensive Car in the World: Bugatti La Voiture Noire

With only one model made every year, it’s easy to see the appeal in this super-sleek Bugatti. In addition to the extreme exclusivity afforded by limited production, the car is a marvel in both form and function.

La Voiture Noire (translated as “The Black Car”) was first revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 2019. Purchased by an unknown buyer, the car went for a record-breaking $18.7 million.

While the buyer's identity is still unknown today, the information we have about the car itself is much more illuminating. The car’s specs, shared by Buggati, reveal that La Voiture Noire is truly in a realm of its own. Perhaps comparable only to the fictional Batmobile, but otherwise unparalleled in performance:

  • Engine — 8L quad-turbo16-cylinder engine

  • Horsepower — upwards of 1,500 hp in each wheel

  • Torque — 1,180 pound-feet

  • Acceleration — 0 to 62 mph in 2.4 seconds

What the World’s Most Expensive Car Looks Like

As if the technicalities weren’t impressive enough, the design of La Voiture Noire is really what makes it stand out. In fact, the design alone is probably a huge part of the reason it was able to sell for so much.

Drawing from Buggati’s own archives, the car’s modern silhouette is in many ways inspired by the Bugattis of old. From the long bonnet to the jet-black colour, hints of the brand’s aesthetic history can be discerned in this modern iteration.

While the car does reference Buggati history, though, it's undeniably modern. With an insect-like shape, custom headlight design and bold “Bugatti” insignia on the rear, La Voiture Noire is unlike any other car out there.

To call La Voiture Noire a work of art would be an understatement. All things considered, it’s easy to see why it’s the most expensive car in the world. ‘Car person’ or not, anyone can see that it’s truly in a league of its own.
