Resort World Sentosa, just off the coast of Singapore on bustling Sentosa island, lets guests stay within the resort’s huge aquarium. Eleven two-level suites have both an outdoor balcony with a jacuzzi upstairs and a window into the aquarium downstairs—that’s 40,000 little roommates! Plus, you never have to leave this wonderland; personal butler service is included.

Huvafen Fushi, Maldives

This 44-bungalow property in North Malé Atoll in the Indian Ocean doesn’t technically offer underwater rooms, though they do all have spectacular ocean views, private plunge pools and outdoor showers. However, the resort does offer an underwater spa where you can take a yoga class or indulge in a luxurious treatment while watching the marine life swim past.

Reefsuites, Whitsunday Islands, Australia

A little closer to home, you’ll find submarine accommodation at the Great Barrier Reef, near the Whitsunday Islands. It’s a large pontoon that welcomes day-trippers as well as overnighters, who can choose from on-deck rooms or underwater ones. The experience includes activities like snorkelling and diving, before watching the sun go down with a drink, dining under the stars and sleeping with the fishes courtesy of the windows on the floor and the wall.

Manta Resort, Pemba Island, Tanzania

Just off the coast of Pemba Island, Manta Resort offers an Underwater Room—a slight misnomer as it’s more of a tiny floating island house that can only be reached by boat. It’s a three-level suite that lets you stargaze from the roof deck or coral gaze from the underwater bedroom. Staff in boats are available to help with anything you need but aside from that, it’s splendid isolation.

Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai

This five-star accommodation offers underwater rooms that look directly into the resort’s aquarium, with its 65,000 inhabitants. Two suites are available, Neptune and Poseidon, both opulently decorated and encompassing two living rooms, a master bedroom and a bathtub—all with huge windows.

The Muraka, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

Muraka (which means "coral" in the local language), opened in November 2018 as part of Conrad Maldives Rangali Island resort. The ultra-luxurious suite is at the far end of a long pier, and the upper level offers two bedrooms, a bathroom with an ocean-facing tub, and an outdoor deck with an infinity pool, but the real appeal lies 5 metres underwater. The main bedroom has acrylic walls that offer panoramic views of the ocean. The suite sleeps nine people, plus the on-call butler.

InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, China

The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, about 35 kilometres outside the Shanghai city centre, was officially opened in 2019. It was built on an abandoned quarry and higher-level rooms get views of the quarry and waterfalls, but the highlight of this hotel is the two underground rooms. Surrounded by a custom-built aquarium, the 37-square-metre room offers a king bed and views of little fishies all day and night.
