I Tried Custom Vitamins For a Month: Here Are My Thoughts

In this Vitable review, I'll be breaking down my experience trying the service for a month. For those who haven't heard of it before, Vitable is an Australian vitamin service that creates personalised supplement programs for customers, based on a number of factors including lifestyle, general health and diet.

In the interest of being honest right out the gate, I’ve never been one to regularly take vitamins. I’ve always found the huge variety available out there a little difficult to navigate. Do I find something specific to fill a gap in my diet, or play it safe and get a multivitamin instead?

On top of that, the cost of average branded vitamins has always been off-putting to me. I eat a healthy, varied diet, so I’ve never been particularly eager to drop upwards of $30 on a multivitamin that I’m not really sure I need.

With that being said, this lockdown period has been uniquely stressful. For me personally, the stress has made it harder to get quality sleep, which often leaves me feeling groggy and slow to start the day.

Of course, the state of lockdown in Sydney has also meant that my usual daily routine has been thrown out the window, which means more than a few skipped meals and occasional stress-eating.

So when I was offered a trial subscription to Vitable, I was keen to check it out and see if it could help me adjust to this new — hopefully temporary — normal.

Vitable is an Australian grown vitamin and supplement service. Operating on a subscription model, Vitable supplies customers with personalised vitamins based on their lifestyles and individual needs.

Vitable’s products are manufactured entirely in Australia, which means they are subject to rigorous standards for safety and testing. The products are made from a range of imported and locally sourced ingredients, and most of them are formulated in-house and with expert consultation.

The formulations are also informed by plenty of academic research from a range of medical researchers and health organisations, and links to these critical studies can be found under each listed product. Perfect for vitamin sceptics like myself.

The company also relies on its own research, testing material up and down the supply chain to ensure that the basic ingredients, as well as the finished products, are stable, safe and effective.

How does it Work?

To get started with Vitable, I had to answer a basic questionnaire about myself, which started off with my age, sex, and the parts of my health that I would like to improve. The categories seemed quite holistic and fairly general, including things like immunity, sleep, skin and brain function.

Moving on from the general areas of health, the questionnaire asked for more specific issues within each of those areas of health — problems with breakouts, skin dryness, brain fog and trouble focussing.

Following that, I answered a few simple questions about my diet and exercise habits — which, as always, was a little guilt-inducing. After a few more wrap-up questions, my personalised vitamin regime was generated.

It was simple and didn’t seem at all extraneous, just including vegan omega for brain function, Ashwagandha for stress management and magnesium night-powder to improve sleep. I was also provided with plenty of info as to why each vitamin was included in my program, including how each product works, with research to back it all up.

All in all, I felt like the program Vitable put together for me was straightforward and fitting for my needs.

Within two weeks I had received my first month-long Vitable program in the mail and was eager to get started!

How Did it Go?

First of all, I thought the packaging system was good for convenience’s sake and for helping to make a vitamin routine: Each day of the program is accounted for with individually sealed packages with my name on them, containing the day’s supplements. Opening them turned out to be a novel and fun way to start the day, and the added touch of my name on the sachets felt somewhat special.

At the same time, mixing the separately packaged magnesium powder into water before bed felt like a much-needed nighttime ritual.

Thankfully, the little plastic supplement packets are plant-based and compostable, which made me feel better about the extra waste I was creating each day with my new regime.

As expected, I didn’t notice much of a difference in how I was feeling straight away, although the magnesium powder did seem to help me fall asleep easier, and get better quality sleep some nights.

By about halfway through the month, I really began to feel better rested overall and less foggy in the mornings. The extra energy undoubtedly helped me start my days much better and possibly even aided me in coping better with the stress of lockdown.

By the last couple of days, I was definitely feeling more alert and overall less moody. Whether this was thanks to the better sleep I was getting from the nighttime magnesium powder, or specifically the effect of the vitamin supplements, I wasn't totally sure.

All things considered, though I was quite impressed with how much better I was feeling every day, by the end of the month.

Was it Worthwhile?

Personally, I was happy with Vitable’s program. It certainly was responsive to my specific needs, which didn’t turn out to be too complicated. I also appreciated that the created supplement program was nice and light, making it feel a lot more achievable.

Being a vegetarian, I have had to learn quite a bit about plant-based nutrition. While I considered Vitable's supplements to be an added bonus to what I already consume, I didn't feel like they would make or break my health.

Did they make me a better version of myself regardless? Yes.

If you're less sure of your diet, however, I think the benefits could be far greater. I think anyone with much more strict dietary needs or poorer health than myself would be even better served by the programs Vitable offers.

Just be aware though, the more specific needs you outline and the more separate items are added to your package, the more expensive the subscription becomes. For example, the month-long supplement courses and magnesium powder I received amounted to $57.50 for the month.
