Last year’s lockdown sent me into a skincare social media spiral which ultimately landed me in the glass skin world of Korean Beauty, more fondly known as K-Beauty. With a legion of beauty Instagram and Tik Tok influencers singing its praises and several K-Beauty brands with already cult-like followings, I decided to investigate.
From bizarre ingredients like bee venom, starfish extract and snail mucin, unheard of products like sleeping masks and moisturising ampoules to unique skincare trends like the 10-step routine and glass, honey and cloudless skin, K-Beauty appears to be far ahead of its Western counterparts.
Below is a list of K-Beauty bestsellers: 6 tried and tested skincare heroes that can tackle a variety of issues and which promise to leave your skin clear, glassy and glowing.
Best Selling K-Beauty Products
Banila Co, Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm
In case you missed the memo, facial wipes are no longer a thing—it’s all about the double cleanse. There is now a range of silky cleansing balms flooding the market, and top of the list is this "holy grail" balm from Banila Co. The hypoallergenic cleanser removes makeup, cleanses the skin, and provides moisture to rejuvenate and hydrate.
COSRX, Acne Pimple Master Patch
Anyone else find that a big blemish will always crop up on the day of a big event?
These bestselling pimple patches are made using hydrocolloid, a type of wound dressing that works by drawing out dirt and impurities and reducing redness and puffiness in just a matter of hours.
Some By Mi, AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle Toner
Acid and serum layering is rife within the land of K-Beauty, so this miracle 3 in 1 toner is perfect. The subtle combination of acids lightly exfoliates the skin, helping to shrink pores and eradicate acne. It’s made with real tea extract and promises results within 30 days.
Cosrx, Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence
Although this product is essentially snail slime, it is now a staple in my skincare arsenal. Not quite a serum, this lightweight power essence is enriched with 96% snail secretion filtrate and helps to lock in moisture whilst replenishing and revitalising your skin. It has a short ingredient list, is scent-free and free of parabens, synthetic dyes and mineral oils.
Laneige, Water Sleeping Mask
The sleeping mask is a recent skincare sensation, quickly becoming the ultimate night cream replacement. The Water Sleeping Mask from Laneige gets to work while you are sound asleep with a perfect blend of ingredients to purify, revitalise, smoothen, and moisturise your skin.
Purito, Centella Green Level Unscented Sun SPF 50 PA++++
This SPF 50 from Purito is formulated with K-beauty favourite Centella Asiatica: A perennial herb grown primarily in Asia. Not only will this sunscreen protect your skin from harmful UV rays, but it is packed with antioxidants, helping to soothe skin whilst protecting the skin’s natural barrier.
To understand the hype, you only need to listen to the ramblings of some of the world’s biggest beauty vloggers and influencers, including Skincare by Hyram, James Welsh and Susan Yara.
