Here at The Outlet, we’re all about cutting back on single-use plastic, reducing packaging and generally making thoughtful purchases. However, we’re not going to sacrifice great skin, so we’re super interested in the meteoric rise in solid serum bars.

Just like shampoo and conditioner bars, solid serum bars reduce the need for plastic bottles, which are filled with liquids that are mostly water. They’re also great for travelling, as there’s no risk of leaks, and they’re generally made with all-natural ingredients, without any of the nasties you sometimes get in skincare.

The leader in this burgeoning market is Dew Mighty, a US-based minimalist skincare brand known worldwide for its unique jelly serum bar ($62). The focus for the Dew Mighty is to provide plastic-free, zero-waste packaging and natural but effective skincare. And needless to say, these values shine through in its hero product.
The founder, Tiffany Buzzatto, has nearly two decades in the skincare industry and a background in chemistry. Her interest in minimalism is well-reflected in Dew Mighty, which is a passion project of hers.

The serum bar is essentially a solid, concentrated version of a natural serum, with no water, wax, fragrance or preservatives. It’s also vegan friendly, and cruelty-free.

Ingredients wise, it has been formulated with jojoba oil, olive squalane, jasmine flower oil, liquorice extract, vitamin C and magnolia bark extract, to nourish, moisturise, brighten and protect the skin. It promises to reduce discolouration and inflammation, and give you a youthful glow. Sounds great, no?

The zero-waste promise comes into play with the bar’s packaging. First-time buyers are encouraged to buy one of the brand’s refillable metal containers in which to store the bar. The containers—also recyclable—come in two nature-inspired hues that will look cute on your vanity (or in your suitcase) and mean no more single-use plastic as far as your serums are concerned.

To use the bar, simply glide it over your face; It will soften into your skin as it warms on contact. Then, massage it evenly with your fingers. Follow with an oil or moisturiser if you like.

Have we convinced you to try a serum bar yet? If you're interested in trying one out for yourself, our top picks.
