Genesis X Reveals a New All-Electric Concept
Genesis Motor has revealed their brand new luxury electric car, the Genesis X, and we’re totally sold.
Genesis, the luxury vehicle division of the South Korean vehicle manufacturer Hyundai Motor Group, was conceived in 2004 along with the plans for Hyundai's luxury sedan, the Hyundai Genesis.
It’s proved a hugely popular arm of the car manufacturer, and Genesis has kicked things up a notch with the reveal of their all-electric offering at the end of March.
The reveal was done via a film screened at a private Los Angeles rooftop event—a fitting location for such a luxury product.
The film was created with the help of award-winning director Jason Bergh, and it combines the American love of high-end cars, the future-facing spirit of Genesis and the beauty of a sustainable, clean future thanks to electric vehicles.
Jay Chang, global head of the Genesis brand, introduced Genesis X, calling it the future of the brand.
“The car that we are unveiling today is a concept car that embodies the essential elements that Genesis pursues in its designs,” he said. “Please take a moment to meet the future of Genesis design through this concept car, which embodies our brand’s progressive and audacious spirit.”
The Genesis X concept is the fifth from the Korean brand—earlier designs were the New York, GV80, Essentia, and Mint concepts—and is the peak of both luxury and sustainability.
The X is a high-performance grand touring (or gran turismo/ GT) model, meaning a sports car that is designed for both high speed and long-distance driving thanks to its combination of performance and luxury qualities.
A strong theme that runs through the X is the “Two Lines” design feature that has appeared in other models. The two lines appear as lighting elements that extend around the front and back corners of the car, as well as at the C pillars, on the charging device and in certain places within the interior.
Even the name, Genesis X, is a nod to two lines.
"The Genesis X Concept can be described as the ultimate vision of Athletic Elegance, the inherent design language of Genesis," said SangYup Lee, head of Genesis’ global design. "The signature Two Lines theme and sustainable luxury will be blueprints for the futuristic designs and state-of-the-art technologies that Genesis seeks to adopt in its future models."
The car’s silhouette is sleek and elegant, with a low body and sinuous lines, in a classic GT design, with a long nose and a short back. The surface of the car seems uninterrupted, thanks to design features such as an integrated hood and fender, and a grille that’s painted in the same colour as the exterior.
This initial offering is in Lençóis Blue, a colour developed to nod to the sustainable attributes of the car and inspired by the lake that forms in the rainy season at Maranhenses National Park in Brazil.
Inside, Genesis X is designed around the driver, with a cockpit-style seat full of displays and gadgets, as well as a floating centre console. The spherical shift lever and the display screen, which manages everything from navigation to air conditioning, adds an extra feeling of advanced technology.
To add to the sustainability cred of the car, various upcycled materials are used to create parts of the interior, including seat belts, airbag covers and steering wheel cover.
To accompany the launch, the Genesis X Concept website is an interactive deep-dive into the car and the driving experience, with close-ups of every angle of the vehicle.
If electric vehicles didn’t interest you before, Genesis X might change your mind.
